What is the maker's mark "Holland Mold"?

Have you ever come across a figurine that just doesn't look professionally painted, or looks like it was done in your son's art class?

Well, that's because it probably was.  Holland Mold is not a manufacturer of porcelain figurines.  They manufactured ceramic molds ready to paint for ceramic companies, craft stores, schools, and amateur painters.  I often wondered why I often see the same figure, painted in different colors, or a different style.  Now I know.

The Holland Mold Company was founded in 1946 by Frank Hollendonner.  Holland Mold flourished for fifty-one years.

Various ceramic designs can be found with the Holland Mold mark, some of which are high-fired professional items. But the majority of pieces are frequently found made by the work of a ceramic hobbyist/student.

Displaying glass figurines on a sunlit window sill

Using colored glass in a sun facing window is a simple, and basic design technique.  Using colored glass in an eastern facing window will soften the glare of the rising sun in the morning.

For an afternoon and evening show, use a southern facing window to take advantage of the longest part of the day.

There are many suncatchers that you can hang by a chain and a suction cup that work very well.  The clearer the glass, the more the sun can shine through it and cast the color throughout the walls and spaces in your room.

More items you could display are glass figurines in different color and textures.  You can have a mix of backyard animals, or songbirds that look like they're perched on your window sill.

Inarco Japan Toad E3534 Brown Glazed Ceramic Animal Figurine

Toads live on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Most toads lay eggs, but one genus live birth occurs.

Toads have no teeth but have a long, sticky tongue which they stretch out to grab its prey.  They are generally brown, thick skinned, stocky, and have warty looking bumps on their skin. They have a pair of parotoid glands on their head, behind their eyes, which contains an alkaloid poison that seeps out when threatened.

Here is a brown ceramic toad figurine stamped "E3534" and has a partial Inarco sticker remaining. He's made of beige ceramic and painted with brown drip glaze. He measures 1-1/4" tall x 3" long. No cracks or chips.

Homemade and DIY Ideas for Bird Baths for your Garden

Here's a few of my favorite homemade birdbaths that you can make from ordinary materials around your house or from a trip to the junk yard.  Usually a tube of cement or silicone will be all the tools you need.

The fancier the design the more materials you'll need.  You can paint, wrap rope, tile mosaics, add a pump, pond plants, stones, and other creative items.  Here are a few of my favorites that are on the internet for your own creations.  It's all about designing your own, for your garden.  Use your imagination.  Remember, birds like shallow water and slip resistant.  They will not go into water deeper than 3 or 4 inches.

 Stacked Patio Block Bird Bath

Patio blocks arranged in a pattern to create a tower and a painted terracotta saucer added to the top. The base is circled in bricks and pebbles and a couple turquoise tiles added.  Very pretty and natural.

Stacked Coffee Cups and Plates Bird Bath

Here's a more common one that can be glued together.  Starts with a bowl, then a teapot, a tall cup, a tea cup, and then the plate.

Either use vibrant solid colors, or paint it in one color.  Careful this one is highly breakable but very easy to clean.

Lamp Base Bird Bath

I think this is my favorite.  Unusable lamp bases with a shallow bowl or saucer for the basin.  Such beautiful colors, textures, and materials for the nooks and crannies in your landscape!

August Perennial Flowers in your Landscape Garden

August is the time that the temperatures start getting cooler and the hot summer days are behind us.  Some flowers are already gone waiting to arise in summer next year.  But all is not lost, there are many late summer and August perennials to keep the show going.  There's lots of colors to choose from.

The trick to planting perennials is you need to plant them according to bloom time.  From February's crocus to October's mums, there are flowers for each month of the season.  You need to have your perennial garden set for March bloomers, April, May, June, July, August, September, and October.  These varieties can be found on the internet or in your flower encyclopedia.

So now you know that each month should be planned so you'll have color bursting in Spring, Summer, and Fall.  For spots that need extra color, annual flowers will fill the gaps and spots that are bare.  You can also add colorful birdhouses, hummingbird feeders, birdbaths, and whimsical garden decor items for even more color and interest.

Have fun designing!

Miniature Animal Figurines in Various Materials

Animal Figurines and miniatures go hand in hand.  After all, these figurines are technically miniatures.  Miniature compared to the real thing.  Figurines can measure life-sized, but then they are categorized as statues.

The most popular miniatures in collector terms can be pewter figurines, bone china, porcelain, blown glass, hand-carved wood, and brass.  The easiest materials to work with would be from a mold and then baked and painted.  The hardest would be handmade such as felt or carvings.

Since carvings would be unique in every product made, they are also the most labor intensive making sure to etch every detail and every pin dot in the design.

Molds for porcelain and glass are a less laborious process.  The liquid is poured into a mold and either baked in the oven such as clay, or cooled at room temperature such as glass or metal.

Wade Whimsies of England and Hagen Renaker of California are probably the most popular of all time.

Bearded Dragons aka Australian Lizards as Pets

My son has Bearded Dragons as pets.   We buy crickets and mealy worms which I’m hand feeding to him in this picture.  He also eats vegetables like raw romaine lettuce, half-boiled carrot slices, half-boiled potato, rose petals, dandy lion greens, herbs, and other summer bugs.  The insects have to be alive and moving around, or they won’t even attempt to eat them.

They originate from Australia and have been bred in captivity and are accustomed to human hands. They will grow to up to 24 inches long.  If you want a pet reptile, this is the one to get. They make a great pet for all ages. They don’t get too large, they can eat a wide variety of available food, are active during the day, they don’t try to get away by jumping around, and are very gentle even when handled.

Yellow Spotted Salamander

Spring is in the air, as we all head outside for fresh air and the warm sun.  We gather our hand tools and rakes for the tedious job of cleaning up the fall and winter mess.  Just raking the garden leaves is a job within itself; they're wet and heavy and usually full of sticks and last years blooms.

I am also cleaning out our window wells, which apparently love to collect the leaves. While reaching down with my hands and grabbing a cluster of wet, soggy leaves I see a black squishy thing.  I thought, that's a really ugly slug.  I moved the remaining leaves and uncovered the coolest creature I've seen in a long time.  A yellow spotted salamander.  I gently picked him up and he just laid still.  No movement at all.  Was he asleep?

Well, I needed to clean out those wells, so I brought him into the woods and buried him under some damp leaves and hoped he'd make it in his new location.

In doing some research, the spotted salamander usually makes its home in the woods near some areas with water for breeding. But they don't live in ponds because fish and turtles will eat all the eggs and larva. Spotted salamanders spend most of their time underground. They rarely come above ground, except after a rain or for foraging and breeding. During the winter, they hibernate underground, and are not seen again until breeding season in early March–May.
