This is a 1979 Enesco "Piglets" carolling bear and his cat friend. He has a song book that reads "Joy to the World". Red foil "Enesco Imports" and an inkstamp "Piglets 1979" on the bottom.

Inside the hole underneath the cat, there is a mfg crack on the inside of the cat. It does not show on the outside at all.

Those pesky squirrels

If you like to feed your backyard birds like I do, you know that the squirrels will sabotage any bird feeder and peaceful gathering of your birds.

I have two or three feeders on the property line in my back yard. This first feeder is made of metal and is supposed to be squirrel proof. The roof is very slippery and if he steps down onto where the bird feed is, there is a seed cover that is pushed down. The squirrels haven't hung from their back feet on this one yet this year, so I'd have to say this is the best investment so far.

The second feeder has a dome on the hanger, followed by the feeder hanging within it. This should work properly except for the fact that I have it hanging from the shed. All they have to do is crawl between the dome and the shed, and voila, they're in. I have to move that one. They get into everything!!

Here's one of my favorite collectibles items:

Vintage May O'Naise Jar DeForest of California Hand Painted 1957

Oh so cute May O'Naise jar with adorable face, bright blue eyes, blond hair, pink cheeks and green hat! From DeForest of California, it is hand painted and marked 1957. There is a little slot on the top of the bowl for a spoon. I found no cracks and only one tiny chip on the hat and no cracks or chips on the bowl. There is crazing on both pieces (I believe you can see that in the pictures) and there is some shelf wear on the bottom of the bowl. This is a fabulous collector's piece as this company is no longer in business. It stands approximately 3 3/4" tall and is about 3 3/4" wide at the widest part of the face.

Animal Figurines In Your Garden Design

Well, it's finally spring and we are having a very warm one up here in Massachusetts. Most of my spring bulbs are either done or still in bloom. In this first photo, I have a concrete-painted skunk. This skunk was originally designed to be used as a door stop. I thought it would look nice in my shade garden at the edge of the woods. Skunks are a woodland animal and he fits perfectly in this space. He's positioned under my PJM Rhododendron. A part-shade, part-sun flowering shrub. To his left, is a bright red Silver Sword Miniature Azalea in bud. Blue Grape Hyacinth bulbs, blue Ajuga ground cover and green and white hosta complete this corner. Sprouting fern are erupting right behind him. You can see leaves and spent Rhododendron flowers scattered on the ground making for a colorful landscape. He stays outside all year round, so paint touch ups are needed.

This next vignette is my white tailed buck. He's also a woodland animal and very skittish. Having him resting under a white Spirea flowering shrub is as natural as you can get. He's surrounded by blue Grape Hyacinth bulbs and white Star of David bulbs in the front that are in bud. When those bloom, he'll have a spray of little white flowers for more cover. This deer is a large landscape statue made of painted cement. He measures about 14" long. He just looks so comfortable here. In summer, he'll be surrounded by hot pink wild Geranium which will brighten up this shade spot. He also stays outside all year round, so maintenance is always needed. He needs to have his antlers re-cemented in the holes. But that's an easy fix. His paint however has remained practically intact, so I'm happy about that.

The final area I'm showing is a part-sun, part-shade area in the front of my house. Sitting under my kitchen window is a white painted bird bath with blue chinese catfish, and a hummingbird feeder which I won't put out until May 1st when the weather is guaranteed to be warm without the chance of frost. Next to the birdbath I put a small ceramic figurine of a flamingo. And as you know, they are water birds from Florida that eat pink shrimp giving them their pink feathers. He deserves a place in the sun by the water. He measures about 6" tall and has a matte finish. He's not too brightly colored, so he doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. A frog or turtle would look great here as well. He's surrounded by Stella D'Oro Daylilies not yet in bud, Hosta and blue and white violets.

Don't be afraid to experiment with animals in different locations in your yard. Make sure that the animals fit in with their environment. It will look out of place if you have ducks in a dry parched area, or hummingbird windchimes hanging in a bare spot with no potted flowers or greenery. Use your imagination and "liven" up your yard with more than just plants. They really do complete the design and also adds some whimsey at the same time.

Vintage Animal Night Lights Add Whimsy

My friends always comment on my frog night light that I purchased at an auction in our hometown. He's so seventies with his raised daisy "skin" instead of warts, lol. His bright glass green eyes glow in the daytime as well as when the light is on. He is marked with a blue "Japan" label so I know he's vintage. He sits on my end table in my sitting room.

My favorite night light is a Poodle mom and her two puppies in a shoe. Just like the old lady who lived in a shoe. This one means alot to me because I own a red toy poodle named scooter. This one is also marked with a foil label "Japan". This one I keep on my dresser next to my jewelry box.

Vintage porcelain night lights can be hard to find when you're looking for something in particular. If you want a zebra for example, you'll be looking for awhile. Always look for a stamp or sticker on the bottom verifying it's age. Replacement cords and lights can be found at hardware stores, so you could even make your own if you have a hollow, light colored figurine. Add to your decor with some whimsical lighting. They're adorable!

Dress up that old birdcage

You can use that vintage birdcage in grandma's basement for a hanging focal point. I bought this birdcage at an auction for $10. It's made of bamboo with a wire hook, and it was originally painted an orange-red color.

I knew it wouldn't go with my decor very well. I bought some metallic gold acrylic spray paint, and that did the trick. It gave it a nice sheen and reflective shimmer. It still had the perch that goes from side to side that the bird sits on.

I thought this would look even better with a "bird" inside. I didn't have a real bird, but I did have a broken hummingbird figurine ornament that I was going to throw away. I attached it to the top of the cage with a fishing line and positioned it right over the perch.

Well, this was looking rather good. I needed a bird dish so I borrowed one from my neighbor. It's a chinese delft design painted in blue and white.

My hubby added a chain to the hook and the other end to the ceiling and now I have a very nice display that hangs over my dry sink. Everyone who sees it thinks there's a real bird in it, until they get closer and see that he doesn't move around, lol.

Dress up your porch or patio this summer and add a touch of whimsy. You can find realistic clip-on bird figurines like these online or in your craft store. You can dress up the cage even more by attaching ribbon, adding a small houseplant, or adding peatmoss to the bottom of the cage. Be creative.

I have a family of 3 carved wooden toads. The wood is Akita Cedar, lightweight and striped. They have little drill holes for nostrils and the two babies have acrylic yellow eyes. The moms eyes are gold metallic paint. The mom does have a glued front toe, but you can't see the repair line with all the woodgrain.

Impressed on the bottom is "Japan". Mama measures 2-1/2" tall x 3-3/4" wide, and the 2 small ones measure 1-1/4" tall x 2" wide.

Those Wonderful Wacky Figurines from Japan

We've all seen them. Tiny little porcelain figurines marked on the bottom "Japan". During wartime, Japan exported these figurines by the millions. For a while, the U.S. forced the Japanese to mark these figurines "occupied". Many of these figures are now very collectible and depending on the manufacturer, can be worth hundreds of dollars. And some unfortunately, are not so wanted.

I've gathered some photos from around the web to show the variations of of the Japanese molds. Most were whimsical and cute in nature. But some were downright wacky in design and color choice.
Here's a couple that show disproportionate limbs and impossible movement. Many figures had human-like features like eyebrows, moustaches, eyelashes, and big smiles.

In the next few photos, look at the human clothing they wear and the bright colors. It made no difference if they painted eyes red, or ears a different color than their bodies. Figurines were also made to wear glasses, smoke pipes, read the newspaper, and sit on the toilet!

Cloisonne and Enameled Metals

The history of Cloisonne dates back to 1800 BC, in Egypt. During the 13th century BC, the ancient greeks made this art as well. Chinese fired-enamelware dates back as far as the Yuan Dynasty from 1271 and was popularized during China's XuanDe period 1426 to 1435.

Foo Dog, China's Quinlong period (1736-1795) AND Cat box, Japan's Meiji period (1890 to1910)

Cloisonné is the technique of creating designs on bronze, copper, and brass. Small, raised metal dividers are soldered onto the main object making many sections. These are known as cloisons, French for partitions. Liquid "glass paste" is painted within the divided areas, the same way stained glass is made. The enamel shrinks from firing in the oven, so the process is repeated several times to fill in the gaps. The finished object is then polished completely revealing the metal dividers.

Antique cloisonne is a collectors piece and very expensive. Todays cloisonne can be found in pendants, bowls, and home decor items.

Worlds Smallest Figurines, Willard Wigan

Willard Wigan began fiddling in the sand making little houses for ants at a young age. He had dyslexia and learning difficulties and could escape an unforgiving world by making his own "little" world.

He went on to create figures made out of thread, dust, and tiny particles found in nature. His paintbrush is made of an insect's antennea. He's used spiderwebs and tiny pieces of thread in his work. His work is so small that it can only be seen with a microscope. He usually displays his figures on the head of pin or in the eye on a needle as seen below in the "Owl" and "Elephant". His contemporary display "cabinet" consists of a globe with a magnifyer lens and light attached which looks down upon the tiny figurine.

Willard works during the wee hours of the night. Before he sits down to work, he induces himself into a deep meditative state to reduce heavy breathing and hand tremors. Any vibrations caused by traffic or natural ocurrances disrupt his concentration and steadiness. His figurines are on exhibition and only a limited amount are available to the public. One figurine takes 3 months to complete. Famous collectors such as Prince Charles and Elton John are fortunate enough to own one which can cost upwards of $40,000.

Herend, A Grand Spectacle

Herend USA has a facinating history. It was founded in 1826 in Hungary as an earthenware producer. In 1851, Queen Victoria ordered a large set of Herend dinnerware and Herend was on it's way as being a known as a "royalty" company.

The folk figurine line was introduced in 1850. The signature black fishnet design was introduced in 1858 when an artist painted "fish scales" on a rooster to serve as feathers. Rust fishnet followed in 1870. When the popularity of Herend figurines rose in the 1950's, other colors were added to the line such as blue, green, raspberry, butterscotch, and chocolate.

Starting in 1957, Robert Grimm of Martin Herend Imports, Inc. was the sole importer of Herend products to the US. Today, Grimm's daughter and granddaughter are the proprietors to distribute Herend to over 400 authorized dealers in the U.S.
